Program — Black Trans Artist in Residence

Effective Dates:

Oct 1, 2024 — On-going

Our Objectives

The BTAR residency is developed to promote both individual and collective healing while encouraging deep creative expression through co-creation and collage. The activities not only focus on artistic practice but also integrate mindfulness, vulnerability, and emotional growth, creating a holistic experience for the BTAR Artist-in-residence and other community participants.

2024/2025 BTAR Program: Creative Intervention for Black Trans Healing

ABOUT RESIDENCY

The Black Trans Artist Resident will be matched with a mentor and begin designing their creative activation. Exploring questions of radical care, challenging who art is made for, and focusing on the process rather than the product of art making. Pre-determining who can engage with their artwork will allow the development of the creative intervention to be approached with critical care grounded in Black trans safety.

Creative Intervention on Black Trans Healing seeks to empower Black trans people to lead imaginative explorations of futurities rooted in community safety. All too often Black trans and nonbinary people are forced to prove their humanity to cis people and the world. Rather than a performative disruption, we seek to provide an artist-in-residence with the tools they need to curate a closed, safe space to explore these issues with other Black trans kin, using their artistic work as an anchor for community explorations.
