Collaborative Art, Shared Creation & Community In Person Community Event

Wildseed Centre / Messy Studio

Feb 22, 2025

This is the second workshop in the series delving into collage while centering Black Trans and Queer folk. This workshop will run for about 4 hours with a half hour break in the middle and multiple breakout sessions. Join us as we explore collage as a medium, shared creation, community. This workshop is facilitated by Emkay Adjei-Manu.

Emkay Adjei-Manu is a multidisciplinary artist and facilitator whose practice delves into visual storytelling as an intimate space to explore Afro-diasporic queer and trans cultures through myth, memory, and sound. Through their primary medium, collage, Emkay’s practice serves as a critical method for crafting narratives that reflect Black queer and trans ways of being, knowing and feeling. By repurposing mass-produced images, they articulate personal and communal stories that confront and explore the social, spiritual, and systemic conditions of Black life. Influenced by the writings of Akwaeke Emezi, Audre Lorde, and Ashon Crawley, Emkay’s work examines the Black queer and trans body as a living archive. They are interested in engaging with both collective and personal memories to cultivate a practice of attunement and a turning towards oneself. Their involvement in community-engaged initiatives includes co-founding Between Them Collected, a Black-led queer and trans reading group focused on the literary arts of Black writers and Rights To Our Tales; a film-curation peer program for Black queer and trans youth. At the moment, Emkay works as an arts & culture manager in queer & trans history and storytelling.

*Note: This is a free event, we ask folks to register so we know who is coming and who is not. There are only 12 spots available.  All creative materials and snacks will be provided. As this event is part of our on-going residency program, Black Trans Artist in Residence, this event will topically be prioritizing queer and trans folks but everyone is welcome to register and attend*
